As much as I would have preferred to live with someone I
knew freshman year, I am still glad that I had the opportunity to live with
someone random instead. I lived in Stetson West in the Bouve LLC, so I was
surrounded by other pharmacy, health science, nursing, and speech therapy
majors. In fact, my roommate was a Health Science major…at first. Although we
did live together, I would not say that we were exactly “friends”. However, we
did respect one another so we did not encounter too many roommate problems
within our room. I would not say that either one of us significantly affected
the other, but we did in many small ways.
My roommate was a soccer player and played intermural for a
while. She also liked to go to the gym and run and often I would see her
stretching on our rug between our beds. Although I do like to stay active, by
doing things such as playing sports, (especially tennis!) I have never been a
big fan of working out or running. But seeing my roommate do it as norm sparked
a small interest in me to start going to the gym as well.
As far as academics and my GPA, I was far more studious than
my roommate was. I would like to think that my study habits influenced her, but
I cannot be certain. On the other hand, her study habits did affect me, but in
a good way. I think her lack of studying pushed me to do so even more because I
worried about my grades more. I knew that I would never be able to be as carefree
as she was, and so I strived even harder to do well in my classes. This year, I have not really kept in touch with her. I
texted her once asking about the dorm she lives in now and have seen her only a
couple times on campus. Last year I went on Alternative Spring Break and have a
great time and I believe that influenced her decision to participate in it this
year. It also turns out that the
Alternative Spring Break trip I decided to do last minute is the same one she
is participating in. And I think that’s kind of funny, especially since I saw
her/waved to her the day I found out.
